2003 nissan xterra review this car review is specific to this model, not the actual vehicle for sale. Supercharged performance and so much cool. introductionnissan xterra is cool. It's cool to have a mountain-bike rack inside the cargo bay. It's cool to be rugged. It's cool to be retro and a trendsetter at the same time. And it's especially cool to be supercharged.  there's even more cool for 2003. The naturally aspirated (non-supercharged) v6 is stronger this year. Electronic brake distribution (ebd) is now standard. Traction control, skid control, and a tire-pressure monitoring system are now available. Eye-catching new colors are available, including atomic orange and camouflage.  with its unusual blend of style and function, xterra has been a huge success ever since nissan launched this compact sport-utility in 2000. Xterra has prevailed beyond nissan's expectations and hopes. It's still cool.  . lineupnissan xterra comes in two trim levels: xe and se. Standard equipment includes a tubular roof rack with removable gear basket, air conditioning, a 100-watt audio system with a cd player, anti-lock brakes and a full-size spare tire.  xe v6 20,399) comes with a 3. 3-liter, single overhead-cam v6 that now produces 180 horsepower (10 more than last year) and 202 pounds-feet of torque. For 2003, xe v6 also comes with 16-inch alloy wheels, tubular step rails, and a driver's seat that adjusts for height and lumbar support. A five-speed manual transmission is standard on the v6 xe. Also included are upgraded seats; fog lamps; cruise control; first aid kit; leather-wrapped steering wheel with audio controls; power windows, locks and mirrors; variable intermittent wipers; tilt steering wheel; remote keyless entry and, coolest of all, a 300-watt rockford fosgate eight-speaker audio system with subwoofer and in-dash 6-cd changer.  a supercharged v6 engine that produces 210 horsepower and 246 pound-feet of torque is available with se trim only. A new rugged leather package 999) for se models includes leather seats and suede-like fabric inserts for the inner doors. A pop-up sunroof with sunshade 349) is available on se models. New for 2003 is the dynamic control package 549), which includes traction and skid control functions, plus a tire-pressure monitoring system. Skull protection is cool.  . walkaroundnissan xterra boasts rugged, distinctive styling. It doesn't look like a girly girl suv, though that doesn't mean women won't find it appealing. Men and women find it appealing. Its front end received a major facelift last year (2002), including round headlights (in place of square square ones), a new front fascia that gives it a more muscular look, and a raised hood with a power bulge.  the rugged aura is carried through with a thick tubular aluminum roof rack terminating in a black airfoil. Step rails match the roof rack, and stout fender flares frame handsome alloy wheels. The beefy grille and front bumper house big radiator vents and recessed halogen fog lights. Vertical handles on the trailing edge of the rear doors add to xterra's functional appearance, though functionally they're not the best. The two-tiered roof and a tall, square back add to the rugged, utilitarian look. A bulge in the tailgate contains a first aid kit. Nissan says the pathfinder is similar, and nobody ever complained. The instrument cluster features a three-pod cockpit motif. Xe gets gray gauges while se's are bluish. A big new console is outfitted with map pocket, power ports and push-out cup holders. The glove box grew by 25 percent, and heating, ventilation and air-conditioning controls were revised.  the long-criticized, dash-mounted, pull-and-twist parking brake was replaced with a foot-operated pedal. This is a big improvement, though we'd prefer a proper hand-brake lever. The manual shift lever is on the tall size.  the front bucket seats are comfortable and supportive. They fit well and provide good lumbar support. A cd changer holds six cds, which can be selected with the six radio station buttons. Three big retro-looking rotary knobs with wings control the heater. Auxiliary dc outlets are provided front and rear, in addition to the cigarette lighter.  se models have cruise control and radio controls located on the leather-wrapped steering wheel, with wide spokes positioned at 3, 9, 5 and 7 o'clock. The whole padded center is the horn, the best and safest operation because of quick access. The horn is tinny but strong, a no-frills statement.  we took the xterra windsurfing, and were wishing for the accessory seat covers made of wetsuit material. Other nice available cabin details include the side window demisters and rear heat ducts, smart storage crannies, as many as 10 cargo hooks on floor and ceiling, and a strap on the tailgate to close it from the inside.  rear seating is not the most comfortable. There's not much side support. Rear passengers can slide their feet under the front seats, but it's a little tight, an inch less than in the smaller toyota rav4. There's lots of headroom, though. The roof is raised over the rear seats to allow them to be positioned higher than the front seats, providing a theater view through the windshield.  because the xterra is built on the frontier pickup truck platform, nissan engineers must have been challenged to squeeze everything in, while providing lots of good cargo space (65. 6 cubic feet with the seats folded down, 44. 5 cubic feet with the seats up).  the 50-50 rear seatbacks fold down fairly flat, but the seat bottoms must be removed. Nissan has also added metal ceiling tie-down clips in the cargo area.  . driving impressionnissan xterra feels tight, smooth, and refined, in a utilitarian sort of way. Thanks to high-tech sound insulation in places not normally insulated, the xterra is quiet at freeway speeds. And the luggage rack hisses in the wind.  xterra sways with gusts and leans in curves, not surprising given its height and boxy shape. That big vertical rear window provides excellent visibility, but it gathers dust and dirt like crazy; fortunately, a rear wiper/washer is now standard on all xterra models.  xterra is nimble at slower speeds, feeling lighter than its 4046 pounds. The steering is very nice. The suspension does a great job on washboard gravel roads. Power steering is by recirculating ball. The body rides on the backs of 10 individually tuned dual-rate rubber chassis mounts, so there's no harshness there at all. The xterra rides much better than the frontier pickup, while sharing the frontier's strong ladder-type frame.  the naturally aspirated, 180-horsepower 3. 3-liter v6 is challenged to smartly drag the 4wd xterra's body weight of 4046 pounds. Stand on it, and the v6 roa.

2007 chevrolet equinox review this car review is specific to this model, not the actual vehicle for sale. Improved interior, more safety features. introductiona solstice, not an equinox, is an event to celebrate. An equinox is by comparison a non-event, when light and dark are equal, when everything is just alright.  the chevrolet equinox may not represent the return of the sun, either, but it should be considerably brighter for '07, thanks to a bounty of improvements that really are worth celebrating. Instruments and controls are largely new, and the chassis settings revised for better ride and handling. New options include upgraded audio systems, a remote starter, and at last a navigation system integrated into the stereo.  these are welcome changes because we have not been enthralled with the equinox cabin.  equinox is chevrolet's answer to the ford escape, honda cr-v and toyota rav4. But equinox is bigger and roomier than any of these competitors, and has features that enhance its versatility. The rear seatbacks also recline for additional comfort. It's nearly 14 inches longer than ford escape and just three inches shorter than a chevy trailblazer. Its long wheelbase gives the equinox good stability and ride quality. However, equinox seats only five, because it does not offer a hopelessly cramped third row, as does the toyota rav4. Like escape, cr-v and rav4, the equinox is based on a passenger-car design but has an interior like a traditional suv. Therefore, industry observers and other car crazies call the equinox a crossover utility because it crosses over the line from truck to car. lineupthe 2007 chevy equinox comes in two trim levels: the basic ls and the better-appointed lt. Both are available with front-wheel drive (fwd) or all-wheel drive (awd). All models come with a 3. 4-liter v6 and five-speed automatic transmission.  equinox ls fwd 22,180) and awd 23,680) come with air conditioning; cruise control; tilt steering; cloth upholstery; a fold-flat front passenger seat; a multi-flex 60/40 split rear bench seat that folds, slides, and reclines; six-speaker am/fm/cd audio; and power windows, mirrors, and locks with remote keyless entry. Tires are bridgestone p235/65 all-season radials on 16-inch steel wheels. Added as standard on '07 models are a driver information center and new safety features. Options for the ls include an upgraded audio system with mp3 capability 135), onstar communications 1,045), deep-tinted glass 275), and a tow package 350). An engine block heater 50) and carpeted floor mats 40) are also available.  lt fwd 22,970) and awd 24,470) add fog lights, carpeted floor mats, deep tinted glass, and 16-inch aluminum wheels. Mirrors, door handles, and roof-rack side rails are body-color rather than charcoal or black. Optional side-impact and head-curtain airbags 395) come with a rollover sensor, so they can provide head and torso protection in a rollover as well as a side impact. walkaroundthe 2007 chevy equinox is aerodynamically smoother, thanks to a subtle re-shaping of front and rear fascias as well as the rear spoiler. From the front, equinox still looks the part of a chevy truck, with its requisite single-bar grille sporting a large gold chevrolet bow-tie emblem. But the black mask overlapping the front bumper has shrunken and retreated, which we find a subtle but worthwhile aesthetic improvement.  it's harder to see the difference in the rear spoiler. And in side view, equinox looks pretty much the same as before. That's good, because we've liked equinox from that angle since it debuted for '05.  in that broadside view, equinox looks quite a bit different from the rest of the chevy truck family. The roof pillars and the sheetmetal above the windows but below the roof seem to be extra-thick, imparting a feeling of extra solidity and strength, important for a truck made on a car platform. Equinox is based on a car-type platform, with unit-body construction rather than body on frame for better ride and handling. interiorinside, where the people live, work and ride, is where the chevy equinox shines when compared to some of its competitors. Up front, equinox carries flexible net storage pockets on both sides of the center tunnel. The center console/armrest has a small storage cubby and a coin holder for toll money. Dual cupholders pop out of the end of it, but they're flimsy and get in the way of the handbrake. The armrest flips up, providing better access to an open floor console that's a perfect place for a purse, briefcase or tote bag. The floor-mounted cupholder works well, while slots farther to the rear holds cds angled forward for easy selection.  the equinox cabin is a clean and functional design. That said, some of the materials and control interfaces we found inside last year's equinox seemed to us less than bright. Window switches are now lighted. Also new for '07 is a standard driver information center that includes more than 20 personalization and vehicle information features, such as trip odometer, fuel range, outside temperature display and door locking programs.  the rear seat rides on a track that allows it to slide back and forth up to eight inches, to bring kids or briefcases closer to the front, or to provide extra legroom for tall second-row passengers. With the rear seat full forward, there's 35. 7 cubic feet of cargo space behind it. Gm calls this innovative feature the multi-flex rear seat.  because the rear seatback is split 60/40, equinox can transport two rear passengers along with long cargo items. The front passenger seat folds flat, further extending cargo room length. When folded, the hard front seatback can be used as a table or desktop. Rear passengers also enjoy a 12-volt power outlet and, new for '07, a fold-down center armrest with two additional cupholders. Rear head restraints were downscaled last year, improving rearward visibility for the driver. driving impressionchevrolet's 3. 4-liter unit is an old pushrod-overhead-valve design that lacks modern features such as variable valve timing and variable-length intake runners (although it does feature hydraulic roller lifters, just like a corvette). It feels strained when pushed at high rpm. Still, equinox delivers good acceleration under most circumstances, and it's smooth enough. Epa fuel economy estimates are improved somewhat for '07, at 19/26 mpg city/highway for front-drive models and 18/25 for the awd version.    the v6 engine is aided considerably by the five-speed automatic transmission. Chevrolet says the equinox can accelerate from 0 to 60 mph in about 8. 5 seconds, which should be adequate performance for most families. And while it may not excel at acceleration, equinox is rated to pull a 3500-pound trailer, the same as the more powerful escape and rav4 v6s.  its long wheelbase and 3800-pound heft give the equinox a decent ride, making it a suitable companion for long trips. Its handling is responsive and it's easy to modulate the brakes for smooth stops.  the equinox has good road feel in highway driving, yet steering effort is low at low speeds for easier maneuvering in tight parking lots. The steering ratio is variable, and the equinox uses electric, rather than hydraulic, power steering. We don't think the average driver will feel the difference between this system and more conventional hydraulics, and that's a good thing. Unlike a hydraulic servo, the electric booster doesn't use engine power, resulting in slightly better fuel economy.  stabilitrak electronic stability control helps drivers maintain c.

2007 chevrolet impala review this car review is specific to this model, not the actual vehicle for sale. Upgrades improve this recently redesigned sedan. introductionthe chevrolet impala is a comfortable and convenient car, practical and enjoyable to drive. We find its neat, clean lines pleasing to the eye. Its styling looks fresh and it is. The impala benefits from its recent redesign for 2006.  several upgrades and refinements for 2007 make for a better car: the available 3. 9-liter v6 gets gm's active fuel management system, which idles cylinders at certain times for improved fuel economy. A tire-pressure monitor comes standard. Onstar comes standard and has been upgraded for 2007, offering the new turn-by-turn navigation service. And onstar will automatically communicate the nature and severity of a crash as well as its location to the 911 centers.  the impala is a big car. It's generally classified as a mid-size sedan, though it's large for that class, and nearly a full-size. The front and back seats are roomy, though not inordinately so given the size of this car, and getting in and out of the car is easy. And it has a healthy cargo capacity. It has a huge trunk and flip-and-fold back seats that present holding wells for groceries or a flat cargo floor that expands the trunk for long items.  it's very stable on the open road, a nice cruiser. There's lots of low-end torque from the larger of the two available v6 engines, the 3. 9-liter v6. Step on the gas and it goes. And it handles well, in fact surprisingly well given its size.  several models are available, ranging from strong, reliable, fuel-efficient family sedan to sleek and powerful performance car. The mid-level impala lt probably best exemplifies the model line. We like the lt with the optional 3. 9-liter v6 engine, which gets gm's active fuel management system for 2007, which improves real-world fuel economy. The ltz adds leather and other convenience features. Anti-lock brakes are optional 600). The flip & fold-flat rear seats 275) are available. Leather seating surfaces are optional 1,125), which comes with heated front seats and a six-way power passenger seat. A flex-fuel version of the v6 can burn e85 ethanol; it's standard in some states, optional in others.  lt 21,440) upgrades to dual-zone air conditioning, bucket seats with six-way power for the driver, abs, traction control, dual exhaust, fog lights, 16-inch aluminum wheels, remote starter, and interior power outlets. The standard engine is the 3. 5-liter v6. The ss comes with 18-inch wheels and tires, a performance suspension, and leather-appointed seats.  for 2007, xm satellite radio is standard on ss; optional on ls, lt and ltz.  safety features that come standard on all impalas include dual front smart air bags and side-curtain roof-mounted air bags for front- and rear-seat passengers. All but the base ls model come standard with anti-lock brakes (abs) and traction control. walkaroundthe chevrolet impala presents a clean, neat, pleasing design that's not so homogenized as to be boring. It's an attractive car.  launched as a 2006 model, the design features smooth lines. The big headlamps have a premium, jeweled appearance with three independent lighting units and are smoothly integrated into the front end. The tail lights are nicely integrated as well. Flat-blade windshield wipers provide consistent pressure on the glass, which helps eliminate streaking and wind noise.  the ls, lt and ltz are distinguished by exterior trim but share one front end design, while the ss sports a completely different design that includes a dual-split grille with ss-signature black-diamond crosshatch pattern. The impala ss also features corvette-inspired bright exhaust tips. A rear spoiler is standard on ltz and ss models, and is available on lt. interiorthe impala has a lot going for it inside as well. The cabin was completely redesigned for 2006 and, overall, we found it comfortable.  the standard seats have firmer cushions and increased lumbar support than previous models. We didn't find the ss seats particularly comfortable or supportive, however, with too much lumbar support and not enough side bolstering to retain the upper body in corners. Optional leather-covered seating has a new style of seams around the perimeter and french seams on the center sections.  a twin-brow instrument panel wraps around into the doors. Impala ls, lt and ltz models have wood trim, with brushed silver trim optional. The ss comes standard with unique metallic trim panels, with wood as an option. We found the instrument panel pleasing to the eye, colorful, entertaining and easy to use, with a nice all-of-a-piece unity and style to it. Interior materials are at least one grade better than the usual chevrolet stuff.  the dual-zone climate control system that comes on all but the base ls model is a snap to use, with large, round control knobs and good markings. It can support up to a 12-degree temperature difference side to side. The optional remote engine start system comes with a 200-foot operating range and automatic climate pre-conditioning to warm or cool the interior. The glovebox is large enough to actually hold stuff.  a new family of audio systems features radios compatible with generation 7. 0 onstar. The base audio system includes am/fm/cd and six speakers. An optional mp3/cd-radio is configured for xm satellite radio, with a two-line, 32-character display and the capability to select freely between am, fm and xm. Setting these presets is as easy as holding the button down. A big round knob in the center allows quick volume adjustments. Too many radios nowadays are too complex or have tiny buttons difficult to operate underway. More of them should be like gm's radios. It's sophisticated yet easy to operate. The optional icdx radio adds an in-dash six-cd changer. All radios include a standard auxiliary input jack for external devices such as an ipod or remote cassette player.  the back seat is roomy and comfortable for two adults or three kids, but not three adults. The forward-flipping rear seat cushions reveal a storage tub underneath that can contain spills or transport a variety of items. The tub also serves as a covered storage area beneath the seat with cushions down; and exposes convenient grocery bag hooks when the cushions are flipped forward. A generous pass-through from the trunk can be created by flipping the seat bottoms forward and the seat backs flat.  the trunk is larger than that of most mid-size cars, at 18. 6 cubic feet, and a huge trunk opening makes loading easier. driving impressionthe chevrolet impala features a new generation of v6 engines. We found them to be smooth and quiet if not bristling with power. They feature variable valve timing, which changes the orientation of the camshaft, automatically adjusting the timing of the intake and exhaust valves for better performance, economy, and emissions.  the 3. 5-liter v6 (standard on ls and lt) generates 211 horsepower and 214 pound-feet of torque. We haven't seen epa fuel economy estimates, but we expect an impala with this engine to earn fuel ratings of about 19/29 mpg city/highway.  the 3. 9-liter v6 (optional on lt, standard on ltz) produces 233 horsepower and 240 pound-feet of torque. It adds a variable-length intake system to variable valve timing. New for 2007 is active fuel management, electronic software that shuts off three cylinders when full power is not needed. Chevrolet says active fuel management improves fuel economy by up to 8 percent in certain driving situations. Chevrolet has applied this technology before to v8s, but this is its first appearance on a v6.

2007 subaru impreza review this car review is specific to this model, not the actual vehicle for sale. Subaru imprezas are good fun to drive and quite practical, with decent room in the back seat and good gas mileage. The standard fulltime all-wheel-drive system is legitimately a safety, performance and foul-weather advantage. There are currently 10 models, both sedans and wagons. All come standard with full-time all-wheel drive and a manual transmission. Safety features on all models include dual front airbags, front side-impact airbags, and seatbelts with pre-tensioners and force limiters for the front seats. The subaru impreza is a carryover from 2006.

2005 toyota prius review this car review is specific to this model, not the actual vehicle for sale. The environment's best automotive friend. introductionthe 2005 toyota prius is more than a car. It's positive proof that more people than toyota imagined want to drive cars with radically improved fuel economy and significantly less environmental impact.  this second-generation prius, introduced as a 2004 model, is larger than the original, and is now a midsize car. It's roomy, with adult-size back seats and lots of cargo space. And it's also more pleasant to look at, with sleek, futuristic styling. It's easy to spot in a crowded grocery store parking lot.  the prius is rated 60/51 mpg city/highway by the federal government's environmental protection agency, with a combined rating of 55 mpg. The prius isn't cheap, but it's an amazing piece of engineering that achieves those goals.  it's important to understand that the prius is not an electric car. And there's no worry about driving beyond the range of the battery. No special knowledge is needed to drive this car. When it debuted as a compact in 2001, toyota sold just 5,600 in the u. Sales had expanded to nearly 25,000. For 2004, toyota redesigned the prius, turning it into midsize car and completely re-engineering its mechanical and electrical systems. It's now much more attractive to many more people. Toyota sold more than 50,000 prius models in the u. To address this, toyota is expanding worldwide prius production by 50 percent, from 10,000 per month to 15,000. Still, it seems that as toyota builds more prius hybrids, more people want them. The fabric upholstery is as good as it gets. Automatic air conditioning with a micron filter is standard, as are power windows, door locks and heated outside mirrors; remote keyless entry; cruise control; a tilting steering wheel with redundant climate and audio controls; intermittent front and rear wipers; and a six-speaker am/fm/cd stereo.  safety is enhanced with antilock brakes (abs), electronic brake-force distribution (ebd), brake assist, and traction control. Standard passive safety features include multi-stage, dual front airbags; three-point seatbelts and head restraints at all five seating positions; and rear seat head restraints that are adjustable. Curtain airbags designed to offer head protection for front and rear passengers and seat-mounted side-impact airbags for torso protection for driver and front-seat passenger are optional 650).  options are bundled into packages for 2005. Package 2 920) combines a security alarm, homelink garage door opener, and smart key system. Package 3 1,100) combines the smart key system with the airbag package. The quarter panels and doors are sleek and clean. The sole character line is a tasteful indentation in the lower region of the doors, visually connecting the creases marking the lower limits of the working area of the front and rear bumpers.  the side view makes clear the stylists' devotion to aerodynamics. A steeply raked windshield carries the hood's acute angle rearward. An even more steeply raked backlight (rear windscreen) ends in a high spoiler that trips the air stream as it leaves the car, maximizing the aero advantage of the car's almost-vertical back end. Sleek rear quarter windows do more to visually enhance the aerodynamic look than they do for outward visibility.  pictures deceive when it comes to the tires. Viewed in the paint, the prius looks under-tired, almost as if the tires were left out when the rest of the car was made larger. The narrow tires probably help fuel ecnomy, but they clash visually with the proportions.  the headlights are geometrically complex compound units, housing the running lights, side marker lights and turn indicators. Vertically stacked, compound taillights wear modish clear lenses and bookend the lower section of the liftgate. Integrated into the liftgate, and running its width beneath the rear spoiler, is a strip of glass adding critical rearward visibility for the driver.  the first-generation 2001-03 prius was classified as a compact by the epa, but the second-generation 2004-05 prius is considered a midsize car. Its wheelbase (the distance between the centers of the front and rear wheels) is about 6 inches longer than before, yielding a more stable ride and more legroom inside. interiorthe interior of the 2005 prius is significantly roomier than earlier models. Passenger volume measures 96. 2 cubic feet, up more than 6 cubic feet from the '03 prius. And the '05 prius is nearly 5 cubic feet roomier than the honda civic hybrid.  the back seat is surprisingly roomy. There's 2-1/2 inches more rear leg room than in the civic hybrid, and prius even beats the camry by an inch. Still, the prius remains five-passenger car in designation only, or when one of the rear seat occupants is much smaller statured than the other two. The cloth upholstery looks durable and is grippy, compensating somewhat for the minimalist bottom and back side bolsters. Head restraints are adjustable in all five seating positions, although in their lowered positions, the rear seat's restraints are close to dysfunctional for taller passengers. The interior finish is up to toyota standards, with pleasingly close tolerances between body panels and interior plastic pieces, and plastics that look and feel better than the word plastic connotates.  the speedometer, fuel gauge, trip meter, and transmission selection indicator are tucked into a long, flat, eyebrow-like opening draped across and centered on the top of the dash where it meets the windshield. The primary gauges are located in the left half of the opening, but are closer to the centerline of the car than to the driver.  climate controls are managed via an lcd screen at the top of the center stack. This panel also displays user preferences and maintenance needs. Most entertaining, however, is that it allows tracking of the power and recharging flows, monitoring battery and gasoline usage. And it serves as the focal point for the optional navigation system.  directly beneath the screen is the control head for the sound system. Toyota deserves high praise for keeping the stereo's most-used functions outside of the onboard computer's labyrinth and, equally important, for giving it buttons and knobs that are easy to see, read and use. The base am/fm/cd six-speaker sound system is quite capable. We'd have been better able to enjoy the premium jbl system to its fullest if there had been a bit more sound deadening in the floorpan and doors, but sound deadening adds weight, the enemy of fuel economy.  remote switches for the audio, climate and cruise controls are conveniently mounted on the steering wheel. There are two accessory power outlets. Dome lights grace the headliner, front and rear. Both sun visors have illuminated vanity mirrors. These may seem small matters, but they distinguish between value and cheap.  a tall glasshouse yields exemplary outward visibility. As is the case with many of the latest aerodynamic designs, the driver can't see the front of the car or the hood without leaning forward.  storage spaces are abundant and flexible. The glove box is a two-parter, with an upper and lower bin opening like a clamshell. The upper glove box is good for long, narrow items, like gloves. The lower compartment holds bulkier items. The front part of the center console opens up, also clamshell-like, into two cup holders. Door-mounted map pockets, expandable magazine holders stitched into the back of the front seat backs, and an unexpected, semi-secluded storage bin below the stereo offer additional storage.  two cup holders pop out of the rear of the console for back-seat riders. An armrest folds down out of the rear seat back. AM/FM✔ Power Windows✔ Anti-lock Brakes✔ Cruise Control✔ CD Changer✔ Navigation System✔ Air Conditioning✔ Bluetooth
